I have been using the BRM Maliko 4.0m and I can confirm that there is a place for this discipline in the foiling world. Coming from a strong kite foiling, wing and sup DW background the parawing opens up new possibilities for us to have fun in the water in a way that these other disciplines don’t.

First and foremost the DW experience (when conditions are right) is the best I have felt. The ability to do DWers in 80L (or smaller) boards along with the easy to get on foil on smaller foils trumps being out there on 100L+ boards and having to go through the pain of learning how to paddle. On top of that the parawing has good upwind performance to allow for a bit of independence in your DWing journey. It’s a much better option than a wing deflate as you’ll have the ability to relaunch it at anytime and also not have the burden of the extra weight on your back. Plus the already mentioned advantage of smaller board and foil. It’s a winner.

The construction and quality is great. It packs down to a tiny pouch 1/3 the size of a wing the same size. Bar, lines and canopy feel good but longevity of the gear is still open as I only had it for one month and I’m 4 sessions in.

The performance of the gear is also amazing. It does what it says it will and some small enhancements could be made to improve the usability. Having front, middle and rear lines with different colours would help when things get tangled and also adding a different colour to the leading edge would help the user know what direction the parawing is directed to once it’s depowered in hand or stowed away. Given this is a V1 I’m sure the progression of the gear will be big in the next two years and then it will tapper down.

The range of the gear seems to be one of its biggest down sides. I’m 85kgs and I use a 4.0m in 16-22 knots. You can go plus or minus 2-3 knots both ways but then the ride is not that pleasant. Not enough wind and it’s a frustrating experience trying to generate power and too much wind it looses the ability to go upwind. As the Maliko is a very low aspect kite it has a very on/ off feeling. You can push the range on the stronger end and fly downwind but over 25kts (with specs above) it would be a scary experience. You could do fast deploy/ get on foil and stow but keep in mind that it will make you fly downwind, so stow it quickly and you should be ok.

There’s a lot more to cover but this is a good intro into this new and awesome discipline. I have posted all my sessions on it so far on youtube and you can check the progression on that platform if you’d like. I go through gear setup, harness lines and connections, stowing, getting up on foil, upwind/ downwind ability and more. First session here (and go from there):

Have only tried one size, BRM 2.9. Love how intuitive this new sport is, did not even try it on land before going in. Our wind is really up and down all the time, the range at which it’s super easy (or even possible at all) to ride is far more limited than with an ordinary wing. But I can see how in suitable conditions it could be a daily driver for some. Haven’t yet had a chance to try it in the waves, but learning on flat water is equally fun.

2nd session and totally comfortable already. 850 cm2 foil, 60 L board.
