Ten best Foiling Podcasts and YouTube Channels
We’re a funny bunch us foilers.
Put us together in a room and it’s as if nobody else is there. Place some nice matte carbon fibre twill infront of us and we’re using words that would make the meek blush, combined with engineering terms that we may or may not fully understand.
A shared obsession and single minded longing to explore those free flying feelings more, whether Wing Foiling, Wind Foiling, Downwinding, Proning, Kiting or Sailing has delivered a commonality across the foiling disciplines that had always been missing from our waters and the tribalism that had surfers, long boarders, windsurfers and kiters eyeing each other with suspicion have started to crumble.
The other upshot of this shared passion is that we all have a huge amount of content to choose from made by passionate foilers all over the world. It’s important that we support these as independent media asks the awkward questions of brands and the wider watersports industry for all of us.
Where to find the best Wingfoil, Downwind and all round foiling content
So time to hit subscribe, download and enrich your morning commute, mid week run or flight with our choice of the best foiling podcasts.
1. Progression Project
Brought to you from Florida by Eric Antonson, the driving force behind Unifoil’s Progression series of foils, this podcast has had guests like Stacey Peralta, Dave Kalama, Kai Lenny and more.
The discussion is often pretty deep, discussing flow states, recovery from serious injury and the finer points of shaping boards and will satisfy the most foil-minded of us.
The overall subject matter is angled more towards Downwind and Surf Foiling but each guest brings their own narrative to each episode.
2. Generic Foiling Podcast
Lighthearted and humorous with guest appearances from industry heavyweights as well as fireside chats between this dynamic duo, the GFP is brought to you from the south coast of England by Liam and Freddie who both hail from a kiting background and have a relatable “everymans” passion for all things foiling.
Often irreverent, always amusing and charmingly self-deprecating, the conversation is of general interest with quite a lot of emphasis on finding out what really motivates guests from various brands.
If you want to get to know the personalities behind your favourite foiling brands, this could be the one for you.
3. The Foiling Project
Don’t be fooled by the tender age of these guys, they’ve already interviewed Armie Armstrong, Marcus Tardrew and James Casey, have immaculate production and are deeply embroiled in the Western Australia Downwinding scene.
This channel explores what motivates their guests, their foiling journey including triumphs and frustrations.
If you’re interested in this channel I would start with the Sveny Boi episode that chronicles the journey of gear destruction that Sven embarked on while learning to foil at 105kg.
4. The Wing Life Podcast
Foiling is truly international and can be done in all weathers and latitudes. The Wing Life Podcast is recorded in British Columbia, Led by Luc Moore, and their episode with Balz Muller truly demonstrates that these sports are not reserved for tropical waters.
The roll call of guests is varied and a true who’s who of foiling sports. Luc mixes the angle between product, motivation and locations and his time between the Pacific North West and Mexico… Lucky Him!
This podcast seems to have a really close relationship with the GWA and it’s a good place to catch up on the latest news from WIngfoil events around the world.
5. Mediocre Foiling Podcast
Unpretentious, deliberately casual and relatable to most “regular foilers.”
Based in Charleston, SC and brought to you by Matt Burchette, Nick Ellyn and guests, the Mediocre Foiling Podcast is utterly unpretentious, there are no allusions to foiling prowess here, just open and honest foiling chatter.
Imagine the conversation you have on a long car ride with your foiling mates… this is similar and it’s refreshing to listen in when you’re missing those conversations.
6. Another Foiling Podcast/Dave West
So Dave might have stopped recording podcasts but there’s a good back catalogue to work through, including a couple of highly amusing weight loss episodes with Armstrong team rider and content king Jeremy Wilmotte (@oceanpixels)
Dave decided to cease recording the podcast but, thanks to some support from industry players is still producing some great content on Youtube. We would recommend that any foiler who has any interest in riding waves watch his Foil Etiquette and Priority video
7. We Are Foiling Podcast
While not specifically limited to Wing, DW or prone foiling the official podcast of The Foiling Organisation gives a bigger picture perspective to what foiling technologies are opening up outside our disciplines.
These guys organise some amazing events from Lake Garda to Pensacola and the podcast’s guests range from Olivia Piana through and Cash Berzola through to Torbjorn Tonrqvist of Artemis Technologies which is applying foiling technology to commercial use cases.
8. Foilers
This is a relatively new podcast from Australia and is well produced with a really professional interview style. So far the guest list has been pretty stellar. Balz Muller, Oceanbound, Adrian Roper (AXIS), Sam Loader (PPC) and the OG Big Dog Sven Mayer.
Now that’s how to launch a foiling podcast!
9. Downwind Drifter
Something a little different. Even if you’re not (yet) on the path to downwinding this Kiwi youtube channel offers a zenlike contemplation of reading bumps, the “feel” of various foil and boards, water safety for offshore runs and most of all some amazing scenery.
I’d highly recommend the episode with Sam Loader, filmed in a cafe somewhere in New Zealand, talking about the trials and tribulations of downwinding. Dry delivery, nuggets of wisdom and a low-key humour.
10. JD Followcam
Last but not least… sometimes you just need some background visuals to while away the time on a dark evening (probably scrolling on your phone to find a second hand foiling bargain)
Filmed by JD in Hawaii and set to music, this channel showcases the sort of foiling that most of us mere mortals aspire to.
JD Followcam’s youtube videos combine awesome riding, great scenery and brilliant editing which inspire foilbrained dreaming – careful though, you might end up booking a flight to Hawaii after lusting for a Foiling Holiday
